MAY ASTROLOGY IN FOUR WINES

19.04 ~ 20.05

Setting out amidst the self-indulgence of Taurus season, a hand-harvested, ‘champagne-esque’ Tasmanian Sparkling is prescribed.

04.05

Shortly after, we move into a reflective mood thanks to the Pluto Retrograde. This calls for a cloudy, skin-contact Chenin Blanc to imbibe the mysticism of the moment.

13.05

This (inner)transformational energy builds to a crescendo at the Full Moon, where we like a smokey Red Blend named ‘Lazarus’ which integrates past and present.

20.05

Finally, we mark the seasonal shift into Gemini with a German Pinot ~ agile and expressive ~ rich in Black Forest notes yet svelte with Mercurial minerality.

Taurus Season ~ 2021 Small Wonder ‘Blanc de Noirs’ Methode Traditionnelle

As the sun lingers in Taurus for its annual four-week stay, we’re invited to ground ourselves, to breathe deeply, and to move with intention. Venusian influence brings a deep appreciation for art, romance, and all things luxurious.

A time for the sensual pleasures of champagne-esque Tasmanian Sparkling. Hand harvested from selected parcels, before spending a leisurely 36 months on lees. The ideal accompaniment for this centred season— the epitome of beauty and patience.

Lifted white florals and citrus on the nose. The palate shows crisp pear and decadent shortbread. Pair with oysters and those dear to you, or as an accompaniment to a bath as part of your self-care routine.

Pluto Retrograde ~ 2024 Italian Plastic ‘Cloudy’ Chenin Blanc

From May 4 to October 13, Pluto enters its annual retrograde phase—this time, fully immersed in Aquarius for the first time ever in our lifetimes.

Pluto, the planet of deep transformation and hidden truths, moves slowly and subtly, but its impact is profound. Now, as Pluto moves in reverse, we enter a five-month window for inner work. This retrograde isn’t about chaos. It’s about examination—finding clarity in the depths of your own evolution.

For this cosmic journey, we like a skin-contact Chenin Blanc. Cloudy by name, cloudy by nature. Pluto rules the subconscious and retrogrades invite us to rework. Think of all that texture as emotional baggage— your shadow and past limiting beliefs like grippy phenolics. But this is Chenin, which means high acid and cleansing minerality.

Notes of pear, crisp, green apple and a saline edge invite a fresh perspective. This drop ushers in the new age; layered and unconventional, building in complexity with each sip.

Full Moon in Scorpio ~ NV Alpha Box & Dice ‘Lazarus’ Ripasso Rosso

The Full Moon in Scorpio rises under the intense backdrop of Pluto retrograde. Because Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, this lunation amplifies Plutonian themes—power, control, rebirth, and the undercurrents of the subconscious. If you’ve been confronting issues around confidence, self-worth, or inner strength, this is your invitation to face them head-on. Under the Scorpio Full Moon, that which has been hidden will rise to the surface. This moon brings release through intense transformation—trial by emotional fire.

Picture the phoenix: magnificent, scorched, and reborn. This is not a gentle rising—it’s powerful, raw, and clarifying. A time to cast self-doubt into the flames and emerge stripped, yet stronger.

Resurrected —this wine is rich, contemplative, and full of soul. Pickled cherries, plum, cigar box, leather. Ripasso reinvigorates past vintages, adding layers and complexity —breathing new fire into old stories.

Brooding. Biblical. Beautiful. Sit in the dark, sip slow, and let what’s buried rise and release.

Sun enters Gemini ~ 2021 Shelter ‘Spatburgunder’ Pinot Noir

The astrological new year saw a very slow start. Throughout March and April both Venus and Mercury were in retrograde, meaning an elongated pause on love, money, travel and communication.

As we shift from Taurus into Gemini, we leave behind the leisurely, refined, accumulative season of materiality and enter the lively, quick-witted, multi-tasking pace of the twins. Tactile themes (that of the body) give way to mercurial themes (that of the mind). While the two energies could not be more contrasting, we have the ideal wine to smooth out the transition.

Spatburgunder is German for Pinot Noir, and this one is a single vineyard expression. Stunningly scented— blackberry and perfume noir. Made from fruit grown in the volcanic soils of the Black Forest, this wine opens with homage to the Taurean sensuality; verdant earth with rich forest fruits—plum, cherry and blackberry. The fruit and depth of amaro gives way to clean, refined minerality on the finish.

What starts out earthy and rich ends up mineral and agile —a transitionary drop.
